Sewing Machine Distribution Program: SHOSHI FOUNDATION
Our Goal: Empowering Women – Creating Livelihoods – Reducing Poverty
Guided by the motto- committed to the welfare of humanity, Shoshi Foundation’s mission is to bring dignity, hope, and financial independence to underprivileged women by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. In many rural and low-income communities of Bangladesh, women possess the skill and willingness to work, but they lack the essential tools to start earning. As a result, they remain trapped in cycles of poverty and dependency despite their potential.
To address this gap, the Shoshi Foundation successfully implemented the Sewing Machine Distribution Program in 2023. Through the provision of sewing machines, skill development training, and continuous support, the initiative enabled women to transform their abilities into sustainable income sources.
This helped reduce poverty and unemployment while allowing women to work from home, support their families, and live with dignity. This completed initiative reflects the Foundation’s strong commitment to financial independence, women’s empowerment, entrepreneurship development, and long-term socio-economic progress.
Project Objectives
The project was implemented with the following key objectives:
- Empower underprivileged women by equipping them with income-generating tools and enabling access to sustainable livelihood opportunities, fostering long-term financial independence and dignity.
- Promote self-employment and entrepreneurship by equipping women with the skills, tools, and support needed to establish and sustain their own income-generating enterprises.
- Reduce economic dependency and enhance household resilience by supporting women to establish reliable income sources, contributing to long-term financial stability and improved living standards.
- Maximize skill utilization and productivity by empowering women with foundational tailoring knowledge to convert their skills into sustainable, income-generating livelihoods.
- Contribute to long-term poverty reduction by enabling sustainable income generation and strengthening economic stability at both household and community levels.
- Strengthen financial literacy and business management capacity by equipping beneficiaries with essential skills to manage earnings, plan finances, and sustain small-scale enterprises.
- Strengthen women-led micro-enterprises by equipping beneficiaries with the resources, skills, and support required to establish and expand sustainable tailoring businesses

Implementation Strategy of The Project
Beneficiary Selection
The Shoshi Foundation identified target communities in rural and semi-urban areas where economic opportunities are limited. Beneficiaries were selected based on financial need, basic tailoring skills, and willingness to engage in income-generating activities.
Priority was given to women from low-income and female-headed households, especially those who can immediately utilize the sewing machines to create sustainable income and improve their livelihoods.
Training and Skill Development
The Shoshi Foundation provides practical training alongside sewing machine distribution to ensure effective skill utilization. The training is designed for women with limited or no prior experience, helping them build confidence and technical ability.
It covers essential areas such as sewing techniques, machine operation, garment making, repair work, and basic business skills, including pricing and income management. Local trainers are often engaged to deliver community-based sessions, which strengthen trust and ensure practical learning.
This hands-on approach enables beneficiaries to turn their skills into sustainable income opportunities and supports long-term self-reliance.
Ongoing Support and Mentorship
The Shoshi Foundation provides continuous post-distribution support to ensure the long-term success of beneficiaries. This includes regular guidance to help women manage their tailoring work effectively, set fair and competitive pricing, improve product quality, and strengthen customer relationships.
The foundation also assists beneficiaries in identifying local market opportunities, enabling them to expand their reach and sustain consistent income generation. Through this ongoing mentorship approach, women are better equipped to build stable, independent livelihoods and grow their small businesses over time.

Machine Maintenance Support
The Shoshi Foundation provides basic guidance on sewing machine care and maintenance to ensure long-term usability and smooth operation. Beneficiaries are trained on proper handling, routine cleaning, and minor troubleshooting techniques.
In addition, continued support mechanisms are in place to assist women in maintaining their machines, helping them avoid operational disruptions and sustain their income-generating activities effectively.

Challenges in Sewing Machine Distribution Projects
- Limited tailoring skills among some beneficiaries require extended hands-on training and ongoing follow-up support to ensure effective skill development and proper utilization of the machines.
- Limited access to broader and more structured markets limits beneficiaries’ ability to expand sales beyond local communities.
- Low initial confidence and hesitation among women initially limit their readiness to start and sustain independent income-generating activities.
- Limited business knowledge and entrepreneurial exposure among beneficiaries, combined with strong competition from low-cost, mass-produced garments, are affecting business growth and income stability.
- Difficulty in accessing affordable raw materials, such as fabrics, thread, accessories, and limited availability of maintenance and repair services for sewing machines in underserved areas, affect smooth and continuous production activities.
- Frequent electricity disruptions in rural and semi-urban areas are impacting consistent machine usage and overall production efficiency.
Sustainability and Future Plan
To ensure long-term impact and continued community development, the Shoshi Foundation has established a comprehensive sustainability framework focused on empowerment, resilience, and self-reliance.
- Implementing regular follow-up, monitoring, and need-based support to ensure consistent progress of beneficiaries
- Strengthening community-led support systems to encourage collaboration, peer learning, and shared problem-solving
- Expanding strategic partnerships to enhance market linkages and improve access to broader customer networks
- Promoting knowledge sharing within communities to scale skills and strengthen local capacity
- Establishing local sewing machine repair and maintenance support systems to ensure uninterrupted productivity
- Providing technical training for selected community members to develop basic repair and servicing skills
- Facilitating access to wider retail channels and sustainable marketplaces for handmade tailoring products
Overall, the initiative is designed to generate a long-term ripple effect, where empowered women not only achieve economic independence but also inspire and support others within their communities, contributing to sustained social and economic development.
